SSÖ-ISSP

The Social Survey Austria is a population survey representative of the Austrian population (aged 16 and over). It analyses changes in attitudes and value orientations on current social issues in Austria, such as concerns about the future, life satisfaction and social integration of people living in Austria. The Austrian SSÖ survey is supplemented by various question modules from the International Social Survey Programme (ISSP), which is conducted in approximately 45 countries worldwide. By repeatedly conducting the SSÖ and ISSP surveys, it is possible to analyse development processes and social change in Austria both over time and in an international cultural comparison. The surveys are also supplemented and deepened by accompanying methodological studies.

As a member of the ISSP, the Graz Department of Sociology has been primarily responsible for conducting the ISSP surveys in Austria since 1985. The Graz Institute of Sociology also played a pivotal role in the establishment of the SSÖ. This is jointly designed, conducted and scientifically analysed by sociologists from the universities of Graz, Linz, Salzburg and Vienna as part of an inter-university research cooperative.

Thanks to the close cooperation with the Austrian Social Science Data Archive (AUSSDA), the survey data is archived in the long term and made publicly accessible. The Austrian ISSP data are also integrated into international data sets at GESIS (Cologne). The SSÖ/ISSP data can thus be used free of charge by scientists and students from various disciplines, but also by educational institutions, media professionals and other interested parties.
