SSÖ-ISSP
Social Survey Austria / International Social Survey Programme (SSÖ / ISSP)
The Social Survey Austria is a population survey representative of the Austrian population (aged 16 and over). It analyses changes in attitudes and value orientations on current social issues in Austria, such as concerns about the future, life satisfaction and social integration of people living in Austria. The Austrian SSÖ survey is supplemented by various question modules from the International Social Survey Programme (ISSP), which is conducted in approximately 45 countries worldwide. By repeatedly conducting the SSÖ and ISSP surveys, it is possible to analyse development processes and social change in Austria both over time and in an international cultural comparison. The surveys are also supplemented and deepened by accompanying methodological studies.
As a member of the ISSP, the Graz Department of Sociology has been primarily responsible for conducting the ISSP surveys in Austria since 1985. The Graz Institute of Sociology also played a pivotal role in the establishment of the SSÖ. This is jointly designed, conducted and scientifically analysed by sociologists from the universities of Graz, Linz, Salzburg and Vienna as part of an inter-university research cooperative.
Thanks to the close cooperation with the Austrian Social Science Data Archive (AUSSDA), the survey data is archived in the long term and made publicly accessible. The Austrian ISSP data are also integrated into international data sets at GESIS (Cologne). The SSÖ/ISSP data can thus be used free of charge by scientists and students from various disciplines, but also by educational institutions, media professionals and other interested parties.

Past co-operations
Values in Crisis (VIC)
Values in Crisis is an international survey programme with questions on perceptions of the COVID pandemic and selected items from the World Value Survey questionnaire. Around 15 countries, including Germany, the UK, Austria and Sweden, participated in the first wave of the survey, which took place between May and October 2020. In Austria, the second survey wave took place in March/April 2021 and the third wave in June 2022.
Austrian Corona Panel Project (ACPP)
The ACPP is an interdisciplinary panel study conducted by the University of Vienna. From March to September 2020, around 1,500 people were interviewed weekly; from autumn 2020, the panel waves took place on a monthly basis. The study collected data on people affected by the coronavirus, their mental and physical well-being, media consumption and information behaviour, as well as attitudes towards the government's coronavirus measures and the social, political and economic consequences of the crisis. The SSÖ team participated in several waves of the ACPP survey with items from previous SSÖ surveys and with new items on changing values during the coronavirus crisis.
