FSP 1: Publications

The volumes in this series are the first to present in detail the most important trends and themes of the immensely fruitful period of sociology in the German-speaking world between the two world wars from a theoretical, empirical and institutional perspective, and to deepen the in-depth discussion of specific sociologies by referring to related disciplines.

Diagnosis and reflection on contemporary society are fundamental to sociological thinking. While geschichtsphilosophische approaches have largely evaporated, interdisciplinary and intermedial fields of experimentation currently expanding the business of Gesellschafsdiagnose. This genre is currently being expanded with performative instruments that are linked to "socio-autobiographical" modes of writing. Here, society is produced with figures and figurative modes of representation at the interface of autobiography and sociological reflection, at the same time, the figures appearing are characterized by their social position. This volume brings together contributions on the current trend from sociology, literary studies, cultural studies and insights from artistic researchers (including Elfriede Jelinek, Milo Rau, Kim de l'Horizon).

A phone call, a video conference or a meeting where protective clothing or partitions are used to maintain distance: Encounters at a distance are increasingly characterising our everyday lives. Traditional theories of interaction, which are based on situations of immediate physical proximity, have described encounters, that do not take place face-to-face, as deficient. These theories must therefore fail to recognise their specific quality of encounters at a distance.
Antonia Schirgi closes this research gap by drawing on the philosophy of Maurice Merleau-Ponty. Her phenomenologically orientated, social-theoretical approach offers a nuanced perspective on close and distanced encounters by focusing primarily on multisensory perception, the concept of situation and the relationship between persons and things. The study thus productively utilises the strengths of Merleau-Ponty's thinking, takes it further and also critically examines the translation of his works into German.

What can sociology contribute to a better understanding of human emotions? Katharina Scherke offers a compact introduction to the sociology of emotions and highlights its contribution to the field of interdisciplinary emotion research. An overview of theoretical approaches, empirical methods and selected topics provides insights into this highly topical field of research. Emotions become visible as social phenomena that are characterised by the social and cultural environment as well as having a decisive influence on it. The introduction is aimed at students of sociology and other social and cultural sciences as well as interested members of the public.

The volumes in this series are the first to present in detail the most important currents and themes of the immensely fruitful period of sociology in the interwar period in the German-speaking world. These volumes thus not only make an eminently valuable contribution to the history of sociology in theoretical, empirical and institutional terms, but also deepen the in-depth discussion of special sociologies by referring to neighbouring disciplines such as social history and the history of ideas, economics, psychology and ethnology.

This volume examines the criteria of excellence producing inequalities of gender in the daily working environment and evaluation of academics. It focuses on case-studies drawn from Europe while also highlighting the rise of new forms of public management and a neo-liberal framing of the value of academic work, that have a much broader global reach. Using participatory research, the book analyses contemporary forms of 'gendered excellence' in an intersectional and international perspective. It will be of interest to junior/senior researchers, teachers and scholars in Sociology, Education, Gender Studies, History, Political Science and Science and Technology Studies.

This anthology sheds light on the constitutive contexts and consequences of borders for both collectives and individuals in various fields of action. Processes of inclusion and exclusion have accompanied the lives of communities and societies, of women, men and children from antiquity to the present; they have lived and continue to live on and with borders. With contributions by H. D. Galter, S. A. Haring, W. Heinemann, H. Jedlaucnik, M. Jeitler, G. Moosbauer, W. Müller, W. Spickermann, K. Tausend and St. Thaller.
