Study of gender is concerned with "gender" as an analytical category that effects and structures all spheres of social life, politics and culture and as such is indispensable to sociological analysis and theory.
The specialization on the Sociology of Gender and Gender Studies aims to strengthen gender competencies of the Department of Sociology at Graz in both teaching and research. It has a close affinity with the interest in cultural sociology at the Department.
The core teaching activities consist in providing grounding in the sociology of gender, gender theories, methodology, and history of social movements for the equality of the sexes and sexual minorities, balancing sociological and interdisciplinary approaches. Students can expand and contextualize their knowledge beyond the general awareness of gender issues by attending specialized BA and MA courses that reflect research interests and expertise of the faculty members.
The faculty members contribute with their activities to the University of Graz research theme "Heterogeneity and Cohesion" and are aiming at developing a research agenda and international collaborations also with regard to the university's priority focus on South East, as well as, Central Europe.
The Professorship in the Sociology of Gender was endowed at the University of Graz in 2005 and to date it is the only one in Austria.
