Information on exams

About the examination dates

The subject examination from "Foundations of Sociology" is an oral examination organised by a commission. Successful assessment of the courses "Introductory Week (EW)" and "Foundations of Sociology (AG)" is a prerequisite for registering for this examination. The subject examination corresponds to 6 ECTS points. --> See Bachelor's degree programme.

The subject of the examination is the content of the lectures "Hauptströmungen des soziologischen Denkens" and "Grundzüge der empirischen Sozialforschung". It is therefore highly recommended to attend these two lectures.

As the examination is conducted by different professors, the following examination material has been standardised for all examiners:

  • For Introduction to Empirical Social Research
  • For Main Currents in Sociology

Volker Kruse, Geschichte der Soziologie. Konstanz: UVK (UTB basics) 2008; Seiten 13-163 und 187-207.

Gertraude Mikl-Horke, Soziologie: Historischer Kontext und Soziologische Theorieentwürfe. München: Oldenbourg Verlag 2001 (5. Auflage), Seiten 175-210.

Uwe Schimank, Theorien gesellschaftlicher Differenzierung. Wiesbaden: VS Verlag für Sozialwissenschaft 2007 (3. Auflage), Seiten 25-72.

Examination dates are offered approx. 3 times per semester (6 times per academic year): in the week after the end of the courses, 1-2 weeks before the start of the courses, and in the middle of the semester.

For the electronic examination (ELP) for VO 319.005 Introduction to Sociology, the specific examination date is allocated centrally. The Department of Sociology or the lecturer have no influence on this.

You can check the examination date scheduled for you via Prüfungseinteilung - Sozial- und Wirtschaftswissenschaften at the latest one day before the day of the electronic examination.

In the event of a clash of dates with other examinations, we can offer you the following option:

  • Please let us know by e-mail einfuehrung.soz(at)uni-graz.at on which dates you will definitely not be able to take the sociology exam.
  • We will then try to allocate you a place on a date that is still free.
  • However, we cannot guarantee that you will be able to get an alternative date.
