Head of Department Katharina Scherke
The Department of Sociology at the University of Graz is characterized by a continuously cultivated diversity of theoretical and methodological approaches and thus offers students a comprehensive and differentiated basic as well as application-oriented academic education.
In teaching, we are committed to providing students with the full breadth of sociology, both in the Bachelor's and Master's degree programs in sociology, as well as in the doctoral program at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Economics. We are also involved in the following Master's programs: International Graduate Study Program in Cultural Sociology together with Masaryk University Brno (Czech Republic), the University of Trento (Italy) and the University of Zadar (Croatia), Computational Social Systems (together with Graz University of Technology), Interdisciplinary Gender Studies and Global Studies. Staff members of the department are also active in various doctoral schools and doctoral programs.
Our teaching is research-oriented, i.e. the main research areas of our department are also incorporated into various teaching formats. In addition, it is particularly important to us to introduce students to research at an early stage through research laboratories and workshops, to involve them in research projects and to involve them in teaching as tutors (peer teaching) and as student assistants.
Our department is involved in numerous international and national research collaborations and we also contribute our expertise to the university-wide research networks and profile areas. The practical significance of our work is reflected in numerous application-oriented research projects, media contributions and a wide range of consulting activities for public, private and scientific organizations and institutions.
