Hello!
I am a sociologist whose interests span the sociology of knowledge, cultural globalization, sociological neo-institutionalism, and classic and contemporary social theory. Alongside these domains, I have a keen interest in the sociology of science and higher education.
I wrote my doctoral dissertation in Sociology at the University of Minnesota, focusing on the historical case of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. Tracking flows of knowledge enabled me to pinpoint changes in the humanitarian field and to recognize the infiltration of ideas from the fields of international development and human rights.
In one of my current projects, I study the rise of illiberal global norms—the undermining of judicial independence and academic freedom—and examine if they are diffused through the same global institutional environment that fuels liberalism. In another project, I study the rise of a shared epistemic culture across multiple disciplines in the life sciences and the humanities. As I argues, it is driven by the engagement with advanced computational techniques. Here I apply STS perspectives, together with the sociology of knowledge and the sociology of science, to better understand today’s academia.

Studienjahr 2023/24
Dr. Lars Döpking ist wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter für Neuere und Neueste Geschichte am Deutschen Historischen Institut in Rom. Als historischer Soziologie forschte er zuvor am Hamburger Institut für Sozialforschung zu Fragen von Demokratie und Staatlichkeit. Sein in der Hamburger Edition erschienenes Buch "Fiskalische Herrschaft. Steuern, Staat und Politik in Italien seit 1945" wurde im November 2023 mit dem Dissertationspreis der Leuphana Universität Lüneburg ausgezeichnet. Im Sommersemester 2024 lehrt er als Gastprofessor am Institut für Soziologie der Universität Graz.
Dr. Sarah Lenz ist wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin an der DFG-Kollegforschungsgruppe „Zukünfte der Nachhaltigkeit“ an der Universität Hamburg. Zuvor war sie an den Universitäten Basel, Frankfurt/Main und als Fellow an der London School of Economics and Political Science. Ihre Forschungsschwerpunkte liegen im Bereich der Wirtschaftssoziologie, Moral Economy, Nachhaltigkeit, Technik und digitale Technologien. Sarah Lenz ist zudem Vorstandsmitglied der DGS Sektion Wirtschaftssoziologie und assoziierte Wissenschaftlerin am Weizenbaum Institut, Berlin. Im Sommersemester 2024 lehrt sie als Gastprofessorin am Institut für Soziologie der Universität Graz.
Studienjahr 2022/23
Tova Benski ist Senior Lecturer Emerita des College of Management Academic Studies, Rishon Lezyon, Israel. Ihre Forschungs- und Lehrschwerpunkte liegen im Bereich Social Movements und der Emotionssoziologie. Sie ist Gründungsmitglied und war mehrmalige Präsidentin des Research Committee „Social Movements, Collective Action and Social Change“ der ISA.
Nicolas Demetzis ist Professor am Department of Communication and Media Studies der National and Kapodistrian University of Athens sowie Direktor des National Centre for Social Research in Griechenland. Seine Forschungs- und Lehrschwerpunkte liegen im Bereich der Politischen Soziologie, der Politischen Kommunikation und der Emotionssoziologie.
